'Winter either bites with its teeth or lashes with its tail.' -Proverb
As this is written, the mercury has topped 18C, short sleeves have replaced winter jackets and, if we let our imaginations wander, it would be easy to believe it is early May.
However, the calendar says mid-November and the arrival of snow, biting winds and freezing temperatures are as expected as a Maple Leafs' losing streak.
However, with the onset of winter comes the most festive time of year and, for many, its most pleasant time.
The hustle and bustle in the malls, the gatherings with friends and family, and the excitement only young children can bring to the holiday season are all reasons for some to embrace winter.
Personally, I have not been fond of winter for many years....or at least since I began driving.
White-knuckle treks in driving snow or icy roads are simply something I could live without.
While the holidays are certainly enjoyable, I often find the lead-up to Christmas and New Year's Eve too frenetic- too much to do in too little time.
Still, despite winter's drawbacks there is something to be said for a crisp, clear morning with temperatures just cold enough to redden your cheeks. On those days, I can't help but marvel at how Mother Nature can turn a frozen landscape into a work of art.
Speaking of art, in this edition Andrea Lefebvre profiles a group of local artists who turn junk into art...a truly unique talent.
Andrew Hind provides a piece on serving the right wine for the holidays.
Ted Brown interviews a local motorcycle restoration expert whose works have made it to the silver screen.
I hope these stories, and contributions from our regular columnists, give you a reason to curl up in front of fire with a hot drink to while away a winter's day.
Thanks for reading.
